What this does
Photo restoration takes an old, faded, blurry or damaged picture and rebuilds the detail an AI model expects it once had. It does two things at once: it enhances the whole picture (recovering detail and cleaning up the smearing that scanning and age leave behind, faces especially) and it upscales the whole image 2×, so the result is larger and sharper than the scan you started with. It is the closest thing there is to handing a faded print to a retoucher, except it takes a couple of seconds.
Unlike most of the tools here, this one runs on our servers, not in your browser. The models are far too large to run on a phone or laptop. So the photo is uploaded to our GPU servers and the restored image comes back a moment later. Nothing is stored.
Good photos to try
- Old family portraits and scans. These get the biggest lift, especially a portrait with one or two clear faces, since faces are where the model has the most to work with.
- Faded, low-resolution or slightly blurry pictures. The 2× upscale adds detail and size, so a small scan becomes a usable print.
- Landscapes and objects work too. With no faces in frame the picture is still enhanced and upscaled just the same.
Too clean? Lower the strength
AI enhancement can overshoot, smoothing and sharpening until the picture looks a little waxy or "too perfect" for an old photo, which tends to show most on faces. The enhancement strength slider fixes that: at full strength the model enhances as much as it can, and lower settings tell it to hold back, staying closer to the original and keeping more of its real grain and character. The 2× upscale is applied regardless, so a lower strength still gives you a larger, cleaner image, just a more natural look. If the first result looks artificial, drop the strength and run it again.
PNG or JPEG
PNG is lossless: the plainest, highest-quality copy of the restored image, right for printing or further editing. JPEG is smaller and easy to share or email, at a small quality cost. The image is restored once on our servers; pick the format before you run it, and download the result.
Limitations, honestly
- Enhancement is an estimate, not a record. The model reconstructs plausible detail rather than recovering the true original. A rebuilt face in particular is a faithful likeness, not proof of exactly how someone looked.
- It uploads, and it is not instant. A photo goes to our GPU servers and comes back in a second or two of processing once it reaches the front of the queue; a busy queue adds wait.
- Very large photos are scaled down first. Anything over a 1536 px long side is reduced before restoring (a hard limit of the upscaler); the output is 2× that.
- Files are held briefly, then deleted. Your upload is removed as soon as the job finishes and the restored image within two hours. We keep no copy, so download it before then.
